ABOUT DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH

Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) evolved from the “Day of Unity” held in October 1981 and conceived by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. The intent was to connect advocates across the nation who were working to end violence against women and their children. The Day of Unity soon became an entire week devoted to a range of activities conducted at the local, state, and national level. The activities conducted were as varied and diverse as the program sponsors but had common themes:

  • Mourning those who have died because of domestic violence
  • Celebrating those who have survived
  • Connecting those who work to end violence

These three themes remain a key focus of DVAM events today. In October 1987, the first Domestic Violence Awareness Month was observed. That same year marks the initiation of the first national domestic violence toll-free hotline. In 1989, the U.S. Congress passed Public Law 101-112 designating October of that year as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Such legislation has passed every year since with National Coalition Against Domestic Violence providing key leadership in this effort. Each year, the Day of Unity is celebrated the first Monday of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. (Source: National Resource Center on Domestic Violence)

Hull Police Join the Pink Patch Project to Raise Money for Breast Cancer Research

HULL — Chief John E. Dunn is pleased to announce that the Hull Police Department will be taking part in the Pink Patch Project by selling pink uniform patches and special t-shirts in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Originating in southern California, the Pink Patch Project is a collaborative effort between public safety agencies throughout the county designed to bring attention to the fight against breast cancer and to support cancer research organizations.

For the entire month of October, Hull Police will be selling a pink version of the department’s uniform patch for $10 each and special pink patch t-shirts for $20 each.

All of the proceeds will be donated to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. Last year, the department donated more than $1,800 to Dana-Farber and are hoping to raise even more money this year.

To purchase a patch or t-shirt, contact Officer Leanne Marshalsea at lmarshalsea@hullpolice.org, or mail a check to:

Town of Hull Gift Fund
Attn: Pink Patch Project
1 School St.
Hull, MA 02045

Checks can be made payable to the Town of Hull Gift Fund. Residents should note there will be an extra $5 charge for t-shirts being sent through the mail.

In addition to selling the department patches, Hull Police officers will be wearing them as part of their uniforms during October.

“We are proud to partner with the Pink Patch Project again this year to help raise money for breast cancer research,” Chief Dunn said. “Sadly, many of us know someone who has been affected by breast cancer and we want to do our part by showing our support and spreading awareness.”

Michael J. Williams Jr (left) and Derek Ruiz (right).
  • Aggravated Burglary
  • Assault and Battery
  • Conspiracy
  • Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor

DEREK RUIZ, AGE 31, OF HULL, is charged with the following:

  • Active Warrant (Previous Shoplifting)

A 17-YEAR-OLD JUVENILE MALE, OF HULL, is charged with the following:

  • Aggravated Burglary
  • Conspiracy
  • Larceny

On Sunday, March 12, at approximately 4:27 a.m., Hull Police were dispatched to an apartment at 544A Nantasket Ave. for an abandoned 911 call.

While police were en route, dispatch notified officers that upon callback, the reporting party stated that multiple men had broken into her home and beat up her son. The victim reported that the suspects were fleeing the home on foot in the direction of Riddles Supermart, located at 505 Nantasket Ave.

Upon arrival at the apartment complex, police saw a person jump over a fence and proceed to cut through the backyard of the neighboring property in the direction of Kenberma Street. As police apprehended the suspect, officers witnessed two other males walking across Kenberma Street and advised the other responding officers to stop them.

Following an initial investigation that included witness and victim statements, police learned that the three men had allegedly entered the residence through the building’s side door, which leads into the male victim’s bedroom. One of the suspects began to attack the male victim as the other two began searching through his dresser drawers, throwing a drawer at the victim’s mother and pushing another female victim to the ground.

All three suspects, later identified at WILLIAMS, RUIZ and the JUVENILE, were arrested without incident.

WILLIAMS and RUIZ were held without bail at the Hull Police Department pending their arraignment at Hingham District Court. The 17-YEAR-OLD JUVENILE MALE was released into the custody of his father and the juvenile probation office was notified.

These are allegations. All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty.

Hull Police Charge Man in Connection with Recent Burglary

HULL — Chief Robert C. Sawtelle reports that the Hull Police Department arrested a man today on an outstanding warrant after officers executed a search warrant at a home in town. Police will also summons the man on burglary-related charges.

Joseph Grainger
Joseph Grainger

JOSEPH M. GRAINGER, AGE 36, OF HULL was arrested on an outstanding warrant for Malicious Destruction of Property over $250 out of Quincy District Court. He will also face charges of Unarmed Burglary and Receiving Stolen Property over $250 (Subsequent Offense) in connection with an Aug. 23 burglary in Hull.

On Aug. 23, a Hull police officer responded to Touraine Avenue for a report of stolen property. A man at the home told police that he had been doing work on the residence and found several of his tools missing that morning. The victim noted that a window was open and the screen was cut on both sides and at the bottom.

Due to GRAINGER’s outstanding warrant, police obtained a search warrant for a home on Packard Avenue, where GRAINGER was staying.

Shortly after 8 a.m. today, police executed the search warrant. While there, police found several tools in GRAINGER’s possession that matched the description of the stolen items from the Touraine Avenue home, which is one block from Packard Avenue.

GRAINGER was placed under arrest for his outstanding warrant. Hull police will additionally summons him to Hingham District Court in connection with the theft.

“I commend the work of Hull officers, who were able to determine this man as the suspect in our burglary case and arrest him without incident,” Chief Sawtelle said. “We’re happy to be able to return the stolen items to their rightful owner.”
