Hull Police Arrest Three On Vandalism Charges

HULL — Chief John E. Dunn reports that the Hull Police Department arrested three individuals Thursday evening for alleged vandalism at Fort Revere.

JACOB LOONEY, EMMA PIMENTAL and EMILY ROSE, ALL AGE 18, OF WEST BRIDGEWATER, were arrested and charged with Malicious Destruction of Property.

On Thursday, Aug. 24, at 7:47 p.m., a Hull Police officer and Massachusetts State Trooper responded to a report that people were seen tagging at Fort Revere Park. Upon arrival, the Hull Officer and State Trooper located LOONEY, PIMENTAL and ROSE holding cans of spray paint.

As they walked down the stairs to interview the three suspects, LOONEY was seen dropping his can of spray paint. All three were taken into custody as a result of the investigation and each was later released on $40 cash bail pending arraignment in Hingham District Court.

These are allegations. All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty.

Hull Police Remind Residents to Share the Road with Motorcycles

HULL — With summer weather quickly approaching, Chief Robert C. Sawtelle and the Hull Police Department are reminding residents to share the road with motorcyclists.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that in 2013, there were 4,668 motorcyclists killed in motor vehicle traffic crashes, and an estimated 88,000 who were injured.

“It is extremely important that drivers are extra cautious of motorcycles which can be hard to see if you aren’t careful,” Chief Sawtelle said. “On the other hand, motorcyclists must also take precautions and make themselves visible to drivers.”

To prevent accidents and fatalities, Chief Sawtelle recommends that drivers and motorcyclists follow several safety tips outlined by the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles.

Advice to Drivers

Motorcycles are more difficult to spot than cars because of their smaller profiles and drivers are conditioned to look for other cars, not motorcyclists.
Traffic, weather, and road conditions require motorcyclists to react differently than drivers, so it is often difficult to judge and predict when riders may take evasive action.
Drivers must always be aware of their surroundings. Remember: Check twice, save a life.
Remember that motorcyclists have the same privileges as other drivers. Be sure to give riders a full lane of travel, and always keep a close watch for motorcyclists — especially at intersections and on highways.
Anticipate a motorcyclist’s maneuvers. A piece of road debris that poses no threat to a car may be deadly for a motorcyclist. Predict evasive moves a motorcyclist might take by always being aware of your surroundings. Also, don’t follow motorcycles too closely. Allow enough room for the motorcyclist to take evasive actions.

You are more likely to be involved in an accident with a motorcycle when:

You are making a left turn in front of a rider.
A motorcyclist is riding in your blind spot.
There are hazardous road conditions. Potholes, wet leaves, railroad tracks, and other obstructions may force a motorcyclist to take an action you don’t expect.
You have an obstructed line of sight. Sport utility vehicles, delivery vans, and large trucks may block motorcyclists from your view.

Advice to Riders

Don’t assume you are visible to a driver. As a motorcyclist, it is your responsibility to make your presence known to drivers. Select and wear an appropriate helmet with retroreflective materials. A motorcycle helmet is your most valuable piece of protective gear and should be visible to drivers. Wear bright, contrasting protective clothing. If you wear dark clothing, wear a fluorescent vest.
Use headlights while riding on the highway, and use high beams rather than low beams. Also consider a modulating headlight.
Proper lane position is important. It helps drivers see you and protects your riding space. Remember, if you can see a driver in the side-view mirror, the driver can see you. Avoid riding in a driver’s blind spot, and always signal before making a move. Never weave between lanes.
Remember, there is no one safe place to ride. Use lane positioning to be seen and to provide extra space for emergency braking situations or avoidance maneuvers. Never share a lane with a car. Drivers may not expect you alongside their cars and may not be aware of your presence.

Hull Police to Co-host Viewing of Film About Youth Prescription Drug Abuse

HULL — Acting Police Chief Robert C. Sawtelle announces that the Hull Police Department, in conjunction with the Hull Alliance for the Prevention of Substance Addiction (HAPSA), will co-host a screening of the film, “If Only” next week.

The event will be held on Wednesday, April 27 at 7 p.m. at Hull High School, 180 Main St., in the auditorium.

Following the film, attendees are invited to stay for a discussion with the film’s producer James Wahlberg, Executive Director of the Mark Wahlberg Youth Foundation. Residents who are in recovery and family members of overdose victims will also share their personal stories after the film.

“The goal of this event is to continue to educate our community, especially our youth, about the dangerous reality of prescription drug abuse,” Acting Chief Sawtelle said. “We hope that this event will be well-attended and that residents will leave with a better understanding of addiction and how it has affected our community.”

Hull Police Arrest Banned Driver for Using Stolen License Plates

HULL — Acting Police Chief Robert C. Sawtelle reports that the Hull Police Department arrested a woman, whose license is suspended for life for at least five previous OUI convictions, after she was located driving around town today allegedly using someone else’s plates.

DEBORAH LETOURNEAU, AGE 51, OF HULL is charged with:

Operation of a Motor Vehicle with a License Suspended for OUI
Operating an Unregistered Motor Vehicle
Operating an Uninsured Motor Vehicle
Forgery/Misuse of an RMV Document
Number Plate Violation

On March 18, around 12:30 p.m., an officer located LETOURNEAU, who is known to police and is known to have a 2010 lifetime license suspension, driving on Nantasket Avenue.

The officer conducted a motor vehicle and subsequently arrested LETOURNEAU after verifying her identity and determining that the vehicle was unregistered, she was uninsured, and that the license plates she was using did not belong to her or the vehicle she was driving.

“This individual has been banned from operating a motor vehicle for the rest of her life, but she continues to show disregard for the law and for the safety of everyone around her by getting behind the wheel,” Chief Sawtelle said. “Her actions are a danger to herself and others on the road, and I am proud that our officers located her before anyone was hurt.”

LETOURNEAU was scheduled to be arraigned in Hingham District Court today.

Hull Police Charge Husband and Wife With Large Marijuana Grow Operation

HULL — Acting Police Chief Robert C. Sawtelle reports that the Hull Police Department on Thursday executed a search warrant on a home, after an investigation into a large and sophisticated marijuana growing operation. As a result, a very large quantity of marijuana plants were found, as well as several firearms and ammunition. A man and his pregnant wife were arrested and face a long list of charges.

As a result, DAVID E. MAGLIO, AGE 35 and ERIKA ZERKEL, AGE 38, BOTH OF HULL, were arrested.

Because the Hull Police investigation strongly indicated that firearms would be present in the home, the MetroLEC SWAT Team was called, out of an abundance of caution, to assist in executing the search warrant. The warrant was executed without incident or injury to any parties.

Upon executing the warrant, police seized a handgun, a rifle, more than $5,000 in cash, more than 40 lbs. of processed marijuana and nearly 50 marijuana plants that were allegedly being cultivated by the pair.

MAGLIO has several prior drug convictions and faces several subsequent offender charges.

“This operation was the result of a tremendous investigative effort by Hull Police Detectives, working closely with our law enforcement partners from around the region and federally,” Chief Sawtelle said. “The male suspect in this case is a career criminal, well-known to police, who was armed and dangerous. All precautions were taken, and I am very proud that this investigation came to a conclusion without incident or injury to either the suspects or police officers involved.”

MAGLIO is charged with:

Cultivating and Possessing a Class D Drug (Marijuana).
Possession of a Class D Substance with Intent to Distribute (Marijuana)
Reckless Endangerment of a Child (Fetus)
Conspiracy to Violate the Drug Laws
Possession of a Firearm without an FID Card (Subsequent Offense)
Improper Storage of a Firearm
Firearms Violation With Three Prior Drug Offenses
Improper Storage of a Large Capacity Firearm
Possession of a Large Capacity Rifle
Possession of Ammunition without an FID (Two counts)
Possession of a Large Capacity Feeding Device (Two Counts)

ZERKEL is charged with:

Cultivating and Possessing a Class D Drug (Marijuana).
Reckless Endangerment of a Child (Fetus)
Conspiracy to Violate the Drug Laws

The Drug Enforcement Agency and a county drug task force, the Old Colony Police Anti-Crime Task Force, were also involved in the investigation.

MAGLIO was held on $80,000 cash bail, and ZERKEL was released on personal recognizance. They will be arraigned at Hingham District Court.
