HULL — Chief John Dunn reports that members of the Hull Police Department, using their advanced training, successfully de-escalated a potentially dangerous situation in which a resident barricaded themself in their residence and threatened to harm themself with a firearm.
Hull Police responded to a home on Beacon Road at approximately 10:30 a.m. for a report of an adult threatening to harm themself with a firearm. Officers arrived quickly and began a dialog with the resident. After approximately 45 minutes of discussions back and forth, the resident was convinced that their best course of action was to come out to awaiting first responders.
The resident, who is not being identified and has not at this time been charged with a crime, was transported by the Hull Fire Department to an area hospital.
A reverse-911 call went out to residents who were advised to shelter in place, out of an abundance of caution. No one was injured during the incident.
The investigation indicates that the resident legally owns firearms, but did not take any firearm out of their safe during the incident. Hull Police have applied for and received a warrant and will take possession of all firearms in the house for secure safekeeping.
“Our society calls upon police officers who need to be prepared to respond to any emergency situation, and thanks to the compassion, training and experience of our Hull Police officers, a potentially volatile situation was resolved, and our officers were able to facilitate the rendering of aid to a resident,” Chief Dunn said.
Chief Dunn would like to thank the members of the Norwell, Hingham, Cohasset and Scituate police departments who responded to the scene to assist on the call.
