A Joint Statement from Hull Police Chief John Dunn and Superintendent of Schools Judith Kuehn

August 31, 2023 by Sean Smyth

“Earlier this summer, the Hull Police Department held an active-shooter drill on the eighth-grade floor at Memorial Middle School. The department periodically conducts these drills to maintain readiness in the event of an emergency.

“On Wednesday, Aug. 30, a person servicing the copier discovered a training round nearby. Please note that these training rounds do not have the capability to leave the barrel and become a projectile. This resulted in a short lockdown of the school out of an abundance of caution for our students and staff. When officers responded to the school, they immediately identified that it was a training round, and the lockdown was ended.

“On Thursday, Aug. 31, a teacher found several more training rounds inside a plastic cup. We did not call for a lockdown at this point because we recognized the items. The school resource officer and the lead police instructor for the active shooter training event conducted a protective sweep of the school on Thursday afternoon to make sure no other items related to the drill were left behind.

“The Hull Police Department and the Hull Public Schools would like to apologize to parents and students for any alarm this caused.

“We also want to stress that at no point were any students, teachers or school personnel in danger.

“These drills are important to make sure everyone in our schools is safe in the event of an emergency. The school department and police will meet in the coming days to make sure any future drills address these concerns.”

Hull Public Schools, Hull Police Partner for Bike-to-School Day at Jacobs Elementary School

May 27, 2022 by jgprstaff

HULL — Superintendent Judith Kuehn and Police Chief John Dunn are pleased to announce that the Lillian M. Jacobs Elementary School held a successful bike-to-school event recently.

On Friday, May 20, over 150 students participated in the event. The day was coordinated with support from the Hull Police and Hull Public Schools School Resource Officer Leanne Marshallsea.

Students picked one of five locations around town to meet and bike to school on Friday morning. A Hull Police officer and two parent volunteers or staff members rode with each group of students to the school.

Students rode all types of bikes to get to school, and some even used scooters. Students parked their bikes and went into the cafeteria for a quick breakfast before heading to class.

“Our bike-to-school event was an awesome experience for everyone who took part,” Jacobs Principal Christine Cappadona said. “Our location sometimes make it difficult to ride a bike to school, so it was important to provide all students with the chance to ride to school in a safe and supervised way. We thank SRO Marshallsea and the Hull Police for assisting us with this event, and all the parents who volunteered their time.”

Hull Public Schools, Hull Police Department Share Back-To-School Safety Tips

September 3, 2021 by jgprstaff

HULL —  Superintendent Judith Kuehn and Police Chief John Dunn would like to offer students, parents and motorists in Hull several important safety tips to coincide with the start of the new school year.

Traveling to School Safety

The National Safety Council (NSC) provides the following tips for students and parents to safely get to school:

Walking to school

  • Walk on the sidewalk, if one is available; when on a street with no sidewalk, walk facing the traffic
  • Before crossing the street, stop and look left, right and left again to see if cars are coming
  • Make eye contact with drivers before crossing the street and always cross streets at crosswalks or intersections
  • Stay alert and avoid distracted walking. Never walk while texting. If you need to respond to a text, move out of the way of others and stop on the sidewalk. Never cross the street while using an electronic device. Do not wear earbuds while walking across the street.

Riding a bike to school

  • Ride on the right side of the road, with traffic, and in single file
  • Come to a complete stop before crossing the street; walk bikes across the street
  • Stay alert and avoid distracted riding
  • Make sure your child always wears a properly fitted helmet and bright clothing
  • Helmets appropriate for bicycling should be worn by everyone – adults and children – on every bike ride regardless of length of the ride.

Riding the bus to school

  • Go to the bus stop with your child to teach them the proper way to get on and off the bus
  • Teach your children to stand six feet (or three giant steps) away from the curb
  • If your child must cross the street in front of the bus, teach him or her to walk on the side of the road until they are 10 feet ahead of the bus; your child and the bus driver should always be able to see each other

Driving your child to school

  • Stay alert and avoid distracted driving
  • Obey school zone speed limits and follow your school’s drop-off procedure
  • Make eye contact with children who are crossing the street

Safety Tips for Motorists

It is important that motorists be alert while driving, especially in school zones and residential neighborhoods. Children can be unpredictable and may ignore hazards and take risks. The NSC provides the following tips for motorists:

  • Don’t block the crosswalk when stopped at a red light or waiting to make a turn, forcing pedestrians to go around you; this could put them in the path of moving traffic
  • In a school zone when flashers are blinking, stop and yield to pedestrians crossing the crosswalk or intersection. Always stop for a school patrol officer or crossing guard holding up a stop sign
  • Take extra care to look out for children in school zones, near playgrounds and parks, and in all residential areas
  • Don’t honk or rev your engine to scare a pedestrian, even if you have the right of way
  • Never pass a vehicle stopped for pedestrians
  • If you’re driving behind a bus, allow a greater following distance than if you were driving behind a car
  • Never pass a bus from behind – or from either direction if you’re on an undivided road – if it is stopped to load or unload children. It is illegal in all 50 states to pass a school bus that is stopped to load or unload children
  • If the yellow or red lights are flashing and the stop arm is extended, traffic must stop
  • The area 10 feet around a school bus is the most dangerous for children; stop far enough back to allow them space to safely enter and exit the bus
  • When passing a bicyclist, proceed in the same direction slowly, and leave 3 feet between your car and the cyclist
  • The most common cause of collision is a driver turning left in front of a bicyclist. Watch for bike riders turning in front of you without looking or signaling; children especially have a tendency to do this
  • Watch for bikes coming from driveways or behind parked cars

As always, if there’s any emergency call 9-1-1- immediately.

The Hull public Schools and Hull Police wish everyone a happy and safe return to school!

HULL — Chief John Dunn and Interim Superintendent Judith Kuehn report that a man was arrested and charged after he was found to be trespassing inside Hull High School and had a knife in his pocket.

The man never brandished the knife and no threats were made during the incident. No injuries were reported.

ALVARO RUIZ, AGE 63, OF HULL was charged with:

  • Possession of Dangerous Weapon (6-inch steak knife)
  • Trespassing
  • Disturbing a School Assembly
  • Assault and Battery on a Police Officer
  • Resisting Arrest
  • Disturbing the Peace

At approximately 9 a.m. Friday, the Hull Police School Resource Officer was contacted by school staff at Hull High School who were reporting that there was an unknown adult male inside the school.

Upon making contact with the man, later identified as RUIZ, in a hallway, it was determined that he had no business in the school. RUIZ became belligerent and spat on officers and was placed under arrest.

In searching his pockets, officers found and seized a 6-inch steak knife.

RUIZ was taken back to the Hull Police station to be booked. During the booking process, RUIZ continued to be belligerent.

In viewing video surveillance footage at the high school, school officials determined that RUIZ had been banging on a side door and a student opened the door and let him inside. A teacher quickly confronted RUIZ and immediately notified school officials who contacted police.

The student believed that RUIZ was a staff member.

RUIZ did not go inside any classrooms and remained in one hallway throughout the incident. The incident lasted a matter of minutes.

RUIZ is expected to be arraigned today at Hingham District Court.

These are allegations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty.
