Hull Police Investigating Anti-Semitic, Racist Graffiti Discovered at Fort Revere

September 4, 2019 by Benjamin Paulin

HULL — Chief John Dunn reports that the Hull Police Department is actively investigating an incident where one or more people recently spray painted anti-Semitic and racist graffiti at Fort Revere.

At approximately 9:45 a.m., Monday, Sept. 2, Hull Police were notified that visitors of the park had discovered several disturbing acts of anti-Semitic and racist graffiti.

Hull Police officers responded and an investigation was launched by the HPD Detectives Unit. Several items of evidence were recovered at the scene, and are currently being processed by the Plymouth County Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

It is believed the incident occurred sometime over Labor Day weekend, between Saturday night and Sunday night.

Some 20 different messages and crude drawings were spray painted on the walls and ground of the old fort.

“The desecration of this historic monument will not be tolerated and to see that the graffiti was anti-Semitic and racist is especially disturbing,” Chief Dunn said. “We will investigate these acts fully and apply the full strength of the law on those responsible. This is not something that will be written off as ‘kids being kids.’ There is no place for hate in our society. These kinds of messages instill fear in members of our community.”

At this time, there are no suspects. However, many of the graffiti messages had a sticker next to them with a purple-faced woman. If anyone recognizes the sticker shown below or has information about this incident, they are asked to contact Hull Police at 781-925-1212.

The Hull Police Department will closely monitor the Fort Revere site and will not hesitate to charge those who are found to be breaking the law.

Fort Revere is an eight-acre historic site situated on a small peninsula located in Hull, atop Telegraph Hill. The site features the remains of two seacoast fortifications, a water tower with an observation deck and a military history museum. It also serves as a burial ground for French soldiers who died fighting during the American Revolution.

“Fort Revere is hallowed ground, and it serve as the final resting place for people who helped our national achieve its freedom,” Chief Dunn said. “Those who desecrated it with messages of hate and intolerance will be prosecuted.”

Chief Dunn wishes to share a message from Rabbi David Grossman of Temple Beth Sholom regarding the graffiti:

Dear Friends:

We will be having a gathering to respond to the act of hate that was recently visited on Fort Revere Park in the form of White Supremacist and Anti-Semitic graffiti. This is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 5 at 10:30 a.m. The fort is located at 60 Farina Road in Hull. Please park on the upper level.

The short program will focus on community, hope and renewal.

Please help our community heal by attending!

Thank you.

Rabbi David Grossman

Hull Police and Fire Departments Offers Hot Weather Safety Tips Ahead of Potential Heat Wave

July 18, 2019 by Benjamin Paulin

HULL – As the hottest weeks of summer approach, Police Chief John Dunn and Fire Chief Christopher Russo would like to remind Hull residents to take safety precautions during their summer activities, especially those that take place outdoors.

“Even though we are on the ocean, temperatures are still expected to get into the 90s during the weekend and beach goers should try to limit their exposure to the sun and heat as best as they can,” Chief Russo said. “Bring an umbrella, wear light fabric with long sleeves and light colors when not in the water and remember to put on sun screen regularly to prevent sun burns.”

The National Weather Service is expecting temperatures to reach into the 90s throughout the weekend in Hull.

Chief Dunn would like to notify residents and beach goers that they should expect higher than normal levels of traffic and delays on the roads throughout the weekend.

“The higher temperatures usually means more people coming to the beach to cool off,” Chief Dunn said. “People should expect additional traffic and delays as Nantasket Beach visitors come and go this weekend.”

To prevent illness and injuries, the Hull Police and Fire Departments recommend the following safety tips from the American Red Cross and National Safety Council:

Heat Safety Tips:

  • Hot cars can be deadly. Never leave children or pets in your vehicle. The inside temperature of the car can quickly reach over 100 degrees, even on a 70 degree day.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids, like water.
  • Check on family, friends and neighbors who do not have air conditioning, who spend much of their time alone or who are more likely to be affected by the heat.
  • If someone doesn’t have air conditioning, they should seek relief from the heat during the warmest part of the day in places like libraries, theaters, malls, etc.
  • Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, light-colored clothing. Avoid dark colors because they absorb the sun’s rays.
  • Slow down, stay indoors and avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the day, which is typically around 3 p.m.
  • Postpone outdoor games and activities if the temperature is too hot.
  • Avoid extreme temperature changes.
  • Take frequent breaks if working outdoors.
  • Check on animals frequently to ensure that they are not suffering from the heat. Make sure they have plenty of cool water.
  • Learn to recognize and treat heat illnesses.

Tips for Parents:

  • Limit playtime at peak sun exposure time and familiarize yourself with the signs of heat illnesses.
  • Avoid burns. If playground equipment is hot to the touch, it is too hot for your child’s bare skin.

To learn more about summer safety, visit the American Red Cross or National Safety Council websites.

HULL — Chief John Dunn reports that the Hull Police Department arrested a man for larceny on Monday, July 15, after he allegedly stole a woman’s pocketbook at Nantasket Beach.

RICHARD NUTILE JR., AGE 52, OF HULL was charged with one count of Larceny From a Person.

At approximately 6:50 p.m., a Hull Police officer, en route to a call, was flagged down by an individual who reported that a man had stolen his girlfriend’s pocketbook. The individual pointed to a man, later identified as NUTILE, who was running down the street.

The officer caught up to NUTILE, who was carrying a backpack. Through the subsequent investigation and speaking to NUTILE, it was determined that the backpack contained a pocketbook and cellphone that belonged to the victims.

NUTILE was arrested and taken to the Hull Police Department to be booked. NUTILE was expected to be arraigned in Hingham District Court today.

Hull Police and Chief Dunn would like to remind residents to keep their valuables safe and secure while at the beach:

  • Only bring essentials for the day
  • Keep your items close to your person or out of sight
  • Consider purchasing a waterproof bag so you can keep your valuables with you as you go in the water

“I’d like to commend the individual who flagged down our officer and was able to point out the suspect, resulting in quick recovery of the items and an arrest,” Chief Dunn said. “Beachgoers should remember to never leave their valuables unattended and always be aware of their surroundings.”

These are allegations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty.
