July 8, 2019 by Benjamin Paulin

HULL — Chief John Dunn reports that a woman died after being pulled from the water at Nantasket Beach in Hull over the weekend.

Amy White, age 69, of Hull died on Sunday, July 7, after she suffered what police believe was a medical incident while swimming in the water.

At approximately 2 p.m. Sunday, Hull Police responded to the area of Beach Avenue and Coburn Street for a report of an unresponsive woman who was pulled out of the water onto the beach.

Upon arrival, officers located the woman, later identified as White, and members of the Hull Fire Department who were performing CPR on her.

White was transported by ambulance to South Shore Hospital in Weymouth. She was pronounced dead at 3:09 p.m.

Witnesses told police that a group of people noticed that White had been floating in the water on her back for several minutes and when they approached her to see if she was alright, she was unresponsive and 911 was called.

While the incident remains under investigation, the initial investigation indicates that the woman suffered a medical incident, leading to her death, and there is no foul play suspected.

An autopsy by the State Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the cause of death.

No further information will be released at this time.

Hull Police and Fire Departments Offer Tips for Safe Fourth of July Celebration

HULL — Police Chief John Dunn and Fire Chief Christopher Russo would like to remind Hull residents about some important safety tips that citizens can utilize to ensure that everyone has a fun and safe Fourth of July holiday next week.

Fireworks of all kinds are illegal in Massachusetts and open burning is only legal in the state between Jan. 15 and May 1. The Hull Police will take enhanced measures—including increased enforcement of beach parking regulations—in order to ensure that the ban on bonfires during the summer months is strictly adhered to and that fireworks are not being used at any time.

“We want everyone to enjoy their Fourth of July holiday and to be safe while do doing so,” Chief Dunn said. “The Fourth is one of the busiest times of year here in Hull and we expect many visitors who will come and enjoy a day at the beach. We ask visitors to please respect the rules of the beach and follow the laws while they celebrate safely and responsibly.”

Below is some basic information on the fireworks law in Massachusetts:

What is prohibited by the law?

Private citizens may not use, possess or sell fireworks anywhere in Massachusetts, nor may they purchase them legally elsewhere and transport them into Massachusetts. The law prohibits any item designed to produce a visible or audible effect.

What are the penalties?

A fine of up to $100 and mandatory confiscation of the fireworks, which cannot be returned.

Additionally, the Hull Police and Fire Departments remind residents to be aware of these key safety tips:

  • Don’t drink and drive
  • Be mindful of pedestrians
  • Attend organized and permitted fireworks displays
  • Report illegal bonfires to the police
  • Remember: alcohol and fireworks do not mix
  • Keep pets indoors
  • Do not leave items on the beach that could be used for burning

“Every year thousands of people are injured by mishandling or misusing fireworks,” Chief Russo said. “Fireworks accidents can cause serious injury or even death. Even sparklers can burn as hot as 2,000 degrees and should never be used by children. Please be safe this Fourth of July and as always, if you have an emergency, call 911.”

Hull Police Arrest and Charge Three Men with Trafficking Heroin

HULL — Chief John Dunn reports that the Hull Police Department arrested and charged three men with trafficking heroin following a traffic stop on Sunday, April 21.

GIOVANNI CRUZ, AGE 19, OF BELMONT; TOMAS MARTINEZ, AGE 24, OF DORCHESTER; and RAPHY VERAS, AGE 19, OF QUINCY were each charged with:

  • Trafficking in Heroin Over 36 Grams
  • Possession to Distribute a Class A Drug (Heroin)
  • Possession of a Class A Drug (Heroin)
  • Possession With Intent to Distribute a Class D Drug (Marijuana)
  • Possession of a Class D Drug (Marijuana)
  • Possession of a Burglarious Instrument

In addition, CRUZ was charged with Operation of a Motor Vehicle with a Suspended License, Marked Lanes Violation and Malicious Destruction of Property Under $1,200.

At approximately 10:45 p.m., Sunday, April 21, Hull Police received a report of an erratic driver in the area of 50 George Washington Boulevard.

Hull Police Officer Stephen Glavin located and observed the driver drift between lanes and almost cross into the opposite lane of traffic twice.

The driver was pulled over by Officer Glavin near 45 Hull Shore Drive. As Officer Glavin approached the vehicle and spoke to the driver, later identified as CRUZ, he noticed a strong odor of marijuana emanating from the vehicle.

During the course of the traffic stop, it was determined that CRUZ was driving with a suspended license. The two passengers, MARTINEZ and VERAS did not have valid driver’s licenses and as a result the vehicle needed to be towed because it was blocking the driveway of a business.

While performing a routine inventory of the vehicle prior to the tow, officers located and seized approximately 41.8 grams of heroin mixed with fentanyl, 224 grams of marijuana, a digital scale and an item used to open locked car doors known as a “slim jim.”

CRUZ was also found to have 47.8 grams of marijuana in his pockets.

The three men were placed under arrest and taken to the Hull Police Department to be booked.

While inside of his holding cell, CRUZ allegedly purposefully clogged the toilet with a roll of toilet paper, causing the cell to flood with water, resulting in the Malicious Destruction of Property charge.

The three men are expected to be arraigned Monday in Hingham District Court.

These are allegations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty.
